Commercialisation Process - ITEK - The Commercialisation Company of the University of South Australia

Commercilisation Process

Most research requires additional support, funding, business, legal and financial experience to successfully develop and bring to market. ITEK utilises a commercialisation process geared towards readying the technology for market entry as each stage of the process is passed.

In broad terms, a new technology or idea progresses through the following major phases:

Evaluation

This step requires close collaboration between the researcher (inventor) and ITEK as commercialisation is very much a partnership. At this point ITEK will typically employ a patent attorney to help with the construction of the most appropriate strategy for IP protection. This typically includes conducting a formal freedom-to-operate (FTO) search and the filing for legal protection of the IP, usually as a patent, trade mark or registered design.

In parallel ITEK conducts a more detailed assessment of the possible applications for the IP and the various markets that should be considered. An understanding of the market opportunity, size and means of bringing the technology to that market is a major focus. Canvassing potential partners for early feedback is also obtained to assist in evaluating the idea. The outcome of this stage is a feasibility plan with a go/no-go recommendation.
